Hungary is taking pride in its gastronomy and excellent wines – if you haven’t met them yet, don’t hesitate! This walking tour will lead you through two traditional wine regions: Eger and Tokaj, home of top Hungary wines. On a gourmet tour you should taste the traditional Hungarian food specialties, too !

 

Walking: 3 full days (3, 4, 6), several shorter walks and city walks

 

Some culinary highlights: goulash – fish soup - paprika chicken – pork stew – filled cabbage – cottage cheese pasta – Gundel pancake – strudel - mákos guba (bread pudding with poppy seeds) – beigli (Hungarian bread) – Aranygaluska

YOUR PROGRAM:

Day 1 - Budapest

Arriving in Budapest, how about a culinary expedition? Within walking distance from your hotel you can find excellent restaurants, fine cafés and trendy bars. Overnight in Budapest.

 

Day 2 – Eger

After a train ride to Eger you’ll be transferred to your hotel. Explore this lovely Baroque town with its medieval castle, Turkish monuments and Basilica. Dinner and ovenight in Eger.   (B, D)

 

 

Day 3 – Eger

Today you make a walking tour among the hills, wineyards and wine cellars surrounding the town. The ’Valley of the Beautiful Women’ is the right place for tasting the fiery Eger wines. Overnight in Eger.   (B)

 

 

Day 4 – Eger

You may want to continue the walks in the town and the surroundings. For relaxation enjoy the Turkish bath or an organ concert  in the Basilica (if available). Overnight in Eger.   (B)

 

 

Day 5 – Tokaj

A short train ride takes you to Tokaj, the historic wine region and UNESCO World Heritage site. From the centrally located hotel you may walk to the wine growing museum and the cellar system. Dinner and overnight in Tokaj. (B, D)

 

 

Day 6  – Tokaj

Today you can walk among the wineyards and slopes where the most famous Hungarian wine ’Tokaji aszú’ originates. In recognition by crowned heads it was denominated „Wine of kings, king of wines”. You are invited for wine tasting in the afternoon. Overnight in Tokaj. (B)

 

 

Day 7 - Budapest

After returning to Budapest by train, don't miss the Central Market Hall for some last minute shopping of Hungarian delicacies. How about a gourmet dinner in a fancy restaurant tonight? (We give you advice.) Overnight in Budapest. (B)

 

 

Day 8 - Departure
